What Documents Do I Need to Open a Bank Account in Mexico as a Foreigner?
Once you have your residency card in hand, the next major step toward settling in Cancun is opening a local bank account. Whether you need to pay for utilities, receive a salary, or manage investments, having a Mexican bank account is essential.
However, for many expats, this process can be frustrating due to evolving requirements and bureaucracy. At J.L. Immigration Services, we provide you with an updated 2026 list of what you truly need to succeed.
Basic Requirements for Foreigners in Cancun
While every banking institution may have slightly different internal policies, the standard documents requested in 2026 are:
Valid Passport: Original and a copy; ensure it is not close to its expiration date.
Residency Card (Temporary or Permanent): You must present the physical card issued by the INM. Banks in Cancun no longer open accounts using only the tourist migration form.
Proof of Address (Comprobante de Domicilio): A recent utility bill (electricity/CFE, water, or landline) not older than 3 months. It does not need to be in your name, but it must reflect a Mexican address.
CURP: This number is printed on your residency card, but some branches may ask for an updated, printed copy of the official CURP certificate.
The RFC Factor: The Most Common Obstacle
Many foreigners are unaware that to fully activate or maintain a bank account, banks will demand their RFC. Obtaining an appointment at the SAT office in Cancun can be a slow and confusing process.
At J.L. Immigration Services, we don’t just help you with your residency; we also provide expert guidance in obtaining your RFC to ensure your financial transition is seamless.
