Detention at Mexican Airports, what you have to know.
Airport detention occurs when the Mexican immigration authority, through the Instituto Nacional de Migracion (INM), temporarily retains a foreign national upon entry into the country to verify whether they meet the legal requirements for admission.
This is not a criminal arrest, but rather an administrative immigration detention, regulated by the Mexican Migration Law and its Regulations.
However, it may result in a denial of entry to Mexico and immediate return to the country of origin.
Why does the immigration authority detain foreign nationals at the airport?
The INM may detain a person when it detects immigration risks or inconsistencies at the time of entry.
The most common reasons include:
Doubts about the true purpose of the trip
Suspicion that the foreign national intends to work while holding tourist status
Financial solvency
Inability to clearly explain the trip
History of repeated entries
Previous irregular stays
Inconsistencies in statements or records
Entering Mexico as a tourist does not guarantee automatic admission into the country.
