We understand that moving to Mexico and navigating the legal system in Cancun can raise many questions. Here are the answers to our clients’ most frequent concerns to help you take your next step with total confidence.
About Residency Procedures
How long does the residency process take in 2026?
The total timeframe typically ranges between 30 and 90 days, depending on the specific procedure and whether preliminary steps are required. Contacting us before your arrival will help reduce wait times and ensure you have all the necessary documents ready.
What is the difference between Temporary and Permanent Residency?
Temporary Residency is granted for a period of 1 to 4 years and is usually the starting point for those beginning their life in Mexico. Permanent Residencyallows for an indefinite stay and includes an automatic right to work, making it ideal for retirees or those with strong family ties.
Can I work with a Temporary Residency?
By default, temporary residency does not include a work permit. However, if you have a job offer in Cancun, we can manage the additional permit with the INM so you can legally perform remunerated activities.
About the Cancun Immigration Office (INM)
Do I have to visit the INM offices in person?
Yes. While J.L. Immigration Services prepares your entire file and submits it online to speed up the process, the law requires you to be physically present at the Cancun office for fingerprinting and to receive your physical card. We accompany you in person to ensure everything goes smoothly.
What are the INM Cancun office hours?
The National Institute of Migration in Cancun is open to the public Monday through Friday from 09:00 to 15:00 hours.
Can you help me with my RFC at the SAT office in Cancun?
Absolutely. In 2026, the RFC (Tax ID) is mandatory for opening bank accounts or purchasing property. We help you secure an appointment at the SAT in Cancun and prepare your immigration documents so you can obtain your tax identification without setbacks.
Entries, Visas, and Tourists
How long can I stay in Cancun as a tourist?
The immigration officer at the airport determines your authorized stay, which can be up to 180 days, but this is no longer granted by default. It is vital to mention your travel plans to ensure you are granted sufficient time.
What happens if I lose my immigration form (FMM)?
It is crucial to keep your entry proof, as it is required to leave the country or start residency procedures. If you lose it, we can help you process a replacement by paying the corresponding fine at the INM airport office or the local branch.
