Mexican Citizenship: The Final Step to Becoming Officially Mexican

Your story in Mexico deserves a passport. Obtain your citizenship with the backing of experts who guide you from start to finish.

Living in Mexico is wonderful, but becoming a Mexican citizen means achieving total freedom. Naturalization grants you the right to vote, the ability to own property in restricted zones without a bank trust (fideicomiso), and, above all, the certainty that this is your country forever.

However, the process through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) is the most rigorous of all. It is not just about filling out forms; it involves exams on culture, history, and a professional level of Spanish. At J.L. Immigration Services, we have been helping expats from the USA, Canada, Cuba, and around the world proudly say, “I am Mexican!” since 2012.

How We Lead You Toward Your Citizenship

We know the idea of an exam and dealing with the SRE can be intimidating. Our method is designed to make you feel secure and prepared:

  • Eligibility Evaluation: We analyze your years of residency, your entries and exits from the country (crucial to avoid rejection), and your background to ensure you meet all legal requirements.
  • Exam Preparation & Coaching: We don’t just leave you with a book. We provide guidance on key topics of history, culture, and language so you can take your naturalization exam with total confidence.
  • Flawless File Assembly: The SRE does not forgive errors. We manage your criminal background checks and organize all documentation so the process flows without obstacles.
  • Bilingual & Personal Legal Support: We explain every stage in your language. We understand the legal nuances and translate them simply, eliminating the fear of bureaucracy.

Why Choose J.L. Immigration Services for Your Naturalization?

  • Exclusive Immigration Specialists: Since 2012, we have dedicated ourselves solely to immigration law. We know the current and local criteria in Cancun and Quintana Roo.
  • In-Person Support: Just like with the INM, we are with you during critical steps. You are not just a file number; you are a person seeking a new national identity.
  • Management of Complex Cases: Whether through marriage, Mexican children, or years of residency, we design the naturalization strategy that best fits your situation.

Mexican Citizenship FAQs (Yoast FAQ)

How many years of residency do I need for naturalization?

Generally, 5 years of legal residency are required. However, this is reduced to 2 years if you are married to a Mexican citizen, have Mexican children, or are from a Latin American country or Spain.

Do I have to give up my current citizenship?

Mexico allows dual nationality. While a formal declaration is made during the ceremony, countries like the USA, Canada, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, Reino Unido, Portugal, Suiza, Alemania, Ucrania do not require you to lose your original citizenship, also they allow to have more than 2 nationalities.

What happens if I fail the history and culture exam?

If you don’t pass, the SRE allows you to wait a certain period before retaking it. Our goal at J.L. Immigration Services is to prepare you so well that you pass on your first attempt.

Can I travel outside of Mexico during the naturalization process?

Yes, but there are strict limits on how much time you can spend outside the country in the two years prior to your application. We review your passport stamps to ensure you do not exceed the limits permitted by the SRE.
