The Temporary Regularization Program (RNE) in Mexico: What Changed in 2025 and Your Options Now
⚠️ Update as of May 2025: The Temporary Regularization Program (RNE) has been discontinued. However, there are other legal pathways to regularize your stay in Mexico. Learn more below or contact our team for personalized assistance.
What Happened to the RNE Regularization Program in Mexico? (2025 Update)
For years, the RNE (Regularization for Humanitarian Reasons) was a reliable option for foreigners who had overstayed their tourist permits in Mexico. Known as the RNE regularization program, it helped thousands of people legalize their immigration status without leaving the country.
However, in May 2025, the Mexican Immigration Authority (INM) officially discontinued this program.
While no detailed explanation has been published, the decision appears to be part of a nationwide policy shift to restructure how immigration is managed in Mexico. The government is seeking more formal, case-specific procedures to address irregular stays.
We know this change has left many people uncertain. But the good news is that there are still legal ways to regularize your immigration status in Mexico, even if your tourist days have already expired.
Can I Still Fix My Immigration Status If I Overstayed My Tourist Visa in Mexico?
Yes, but every case is different. Below are some of the legal alternatives available in Mexico in 2025 for people who are out of status:
Family-Based Residency (Vínculo Familiar) If you have Mexican children, parents, or a spouse, you may qualify for regularization based on family connection.
Work Visa or Investment-Based Residency If you receive a formal job offer from a Mexican company or have an established business in Mexico, you may be able to regularize your status legally.
Marriage to a Mexican Citizen or Resident If you are married to a Mexican citizen or someone with legal residency in Mexico, there are family visa options available.
Humanitarian Grounds In very specific cases (such as medical, security, or personal risk situations), the INM may still allow regularization for humanitarian reasons.
